The College of Art and Social Sciences, (CASS) of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Sciences and Technology (KNUST) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the Ghana Trades Union Congress, TUC. The MOU would guarantee both parties the opportunity and the formal channel to develop and implement mutually beneficial programmes.
The Vice-Chancellor, Prof. K.K. Adarkwa in his opening statement said the major function of the university is to research and serve the communities. The MOU therefore is to tap into the expertise of both parties for mutual benefit. Prof. Adarkwa was quick to add that the Memorandum of Understanding would be reviewed periodically and cautioned that both parties should endeavour to meet the requirements and abide by the terms outlined in the MOU, since the University would be concerned about quality control and assurance.
The Secretary General of TUC, Kofi Asamoah, said, the Ghana Trades Union Congress is a workers’ organisation consisting of seventeen trade unions, representing the workers of Ghana. He noted that the TUC is determined to uphold the dignity of labour by maintaining a genuine independent organization of workers with a duty to faithfully serve the workers and the nation at large.
Mr. Kofi Asamoah stated that the College of Art and Social Sciences (CASS) of KNUST is a University College for higher education and research in fields including Sociology, Economics, Political Science, Law, Rural Art and Human Resource Management to ensure effective operation of the public institutions to propel Socio-economic development of Ghana. He further stated that both parties have common overall objectives and activities to complement each other, hence the signing of the MOU.
The Provost of the College of Art and Social Sciences, Prof. Dr. Dr. Daniel Bour said, “recognizing the need of academia and industry to collaborate, both parties have been deliberating on training programmes and capacity building for the past two years.”
Prof. K.K. Adarkwa signed on behalf of KNUST whilst Kofi Asamoah signed on behalf of TUC. The Registrar, Mr. Kobby Yebo-Okrah and Alex K. Bonney signed as witnesses, on behalf of KNUST and TUC respectively.
